Quality control systems for mills and plant of the future
Enhanced production and quality control
It’s crazy out there
Pulp, paper, nonwoven and packaging manufacturers are experiencing unprecedented changes — both international volumes and domestic production. Everything is shifting. And while economies and markets change, your most experienced people are retiring at a record pace. Now, you want to do more than survive; you want to prosper.
Do you feel like prosperity requires your mill or plant to do more with less? Let’s quantify it. Improving product quality, reducing waste and maximizing output — you need to accomplish all three. Meanwhile, you still have to hired and train personnel, while maintaining, repairing and upgrading aging systems. Every capital projects budget has its limit.
An upgrade solution that helps you reach your goals and lowers costs would be the Iron Man of upgrades.
PantherQCS defined
PantherQCS is an advanced quality control system which provides enhanced production control for continuous process manufacturing lines such as paper machines and nonwoven lines. It incorporates selective hardware and software modules which integrate key machine process variables from stock approach to web quality scanners and sensors. PantherQCS advanced MD control algorithms perform a predictive mathematical material/energy balance for overall production improvements. Integrated CD control can provide improved sheet quality. Implementation of a PantherQCS advanced process control system has been shown to produce significant returns on investment.
Our QCS is also ideal for legacy system upgrades where existing system frames and sensors continue to perform reliably. Panther refurbish an existing scanner and add PantherQCS to work with upgraded equipment. This fundamentally reduces system cost since a major cost is in frame and sensor replacement. Expert engineers and technicians perform these services remotely and on-site, where their combined industry expertise rivals the market in depth of experience and know-how.
PantherQCS is differs fundamentally from other systems by offering advanced measurement and control, coupled with extraordinarily low cost of ownership. First, open client/server hardware, I/O and base software components are used to reduce initial cost and ensure long-term availability. Second, the systems and software are built to allow remote support. This reduces high maintenance costs by using remote troubleshooting diagnostics and shorter on-site visits, rather than the a traditionally extensive on-site presence.
QCS upgrades done just right
PantherQCS combines hardware (equipment, sensors and servers), software, services and support. Our competitors offer monolithic systems that require a forklift-style installation or upgrade, but PantherQCS solutions are modular, scalable and leverage valuable existing infrastructure when prudent. Also, our solutions can include Mahlo scanners, which are engineered for the rigorous demands of continuous manufacturing in challenging industrial environments. But we understand there is more to upgrade projects than specifications.
We know that timing is everything. A PantherQCS system can be purchased in stages, and Panther can complete installations and upgrades in smaller, more affordable steps during scheduled downtime. This efficient approach to upgrades does not interfere with production and agrees with capital project budgets and cashflow.
Breakthrough results
Leading out with bold and ingenious engineering for nearly 30 years, Panther Systems offers solutions for the pulp and paper manufacturers, converting and packaging operations and nonwoven manufacturers to get a handle on machine control, quality and associated data. We improve plant workflow and streamline costs. Our tools monitor production, help you diagnose problems and give you the ability to predict and avoid problems before they happen. PantherQCS is just one more example of Panther’s way.
Know how to make the mill more profitable?
Advanced MD control algorithms
The advanced control algorithms of PantherQCS are a result of many years of paper machine control applications work by Panther. The knowledge base includes considerable observation of experienced machine tenders. The prediction algorithms match the mathematical material/energy balance to the machine, therefore, accurately representing actual running conditions.
The major multi-variable MD control packages include:
Virtual basis weight
This is a comprehensive material balance algorithm which continuously adjusts MD stock flow in response to detected trends in key input variables such as consistency, freeness, speed, paper width and total flow. The algorithm incorporates proprietary strategies for feed forward predictive weight, feed forward freeness, and scanner feedback. In formers/vats, stock ratio control is included. Operator set targets such as the basis weight and moisture are included.
Multi-variable moisture control
This algorithm sets optimal MD moisture using a combination of inputs including machine speed, steam and temperatures, along with cascade and feed back control schemes. Input variables include scanner moisture (min/max/avg), sheet temperature and machine speed. Targets include items such as moisture target, speed limits and ramp limits. Note: this algorithm interacts with Virtual Basis Weight to build a more comprehensive balance of the machine’s operation. The two algorithms are dependent on each other for ideal operation.
Automatic grade change & QuickChange
This algorithm moves the machine to the new operating conditions based on the next grade to be run. Inputs include the product/grade name and specifications, fiber stock ratios, stock flow, ramp time and limits, settle time and next grade quality targets/limits. The output is selectable between ramp with stock flow or ramp before stock flow. QuickChange is a subset operation that automatically accounts for a sheet break and recovery of on-spec products within one machine dead time period.
Advanced CD control algorithms
MD control strategy to provide a comprehensive interactive solution. The CD control package includes CD zone mapping, control algorithms, actuator decoupling, limit checks, manual or automatic actuator control, a full set of configuration parameters and event flags, and interactive simplified operator screens for the machine tender.
The CD control package can be applied to most actuated CD control systems, including slice lip, rewet showers, steam boxes and stock dilution.
Three variations of CD control are available depending upon machine requirements. These are:
Single profile: used to control a single actuator set for one profile quality variable (most common)
Ratio profile: used to split control between 2 actuator sets and 2 profile quality variables
Frequency split: used to split control between 2 actuators affecting one common profile variable
Panther CD control includes overlays whereby stored profiles can be overlaid on a current profile for easy CD troubleshooting purposes.
Complete actuator status and control is included for maximum operator usefulness of the CD control system.
PantherQCS operator station
The QCS Operator Station is a comprehensive software interface for paper machine control. The software includes dedicated screens for specific control such as MD weight targets, grade selection, and sensor calibration. It includes control loop interfaces, profile trending, process trending, graphical process views, alarm pages, scanner control, and dedicated reports. These dedicated screens are built by and for machine tenders as opposed to typical generic faceplate and graphics pages. They provide a direct and simplified view of machine controls and production as an experienced operator would prefer.
The QCS Operator runs on conventional PC hardware and operating systems over state-of-the-art Local Area Networks (LAN’s). All components are commercially available in the marketplace.
